There is however, much more to Egypt than meets the eye; it extends far beyond the pyramids of Giza or the Great Sphinx; there are numerous fantastic discoveries in Egypt yet to be made. In our search for peculiar Egypt tour activities, I will introduce you to lesser-known sites in Egypt: explore the catacombs under Alexandria’s Kom El-Shoqafa.

Catacombs of Kom El-Shoqafa

Located in Alexandria, the site of Kom El-Shoqafa catacombs provides tourists with the taste of ancient civilizations from Egypt, Greece, and Rome. A few feet down in the ground there exists one of the most fascinating of all the wonders of the Middle Ages, an underground graveyard, dating from the second century.

The catacombs are structured over three levels carved directly into the rock, creating a labyrinthine complex beneath Alexandria's western cemetery.

 

Shali Fortress

Shali Fortress is a notable example of ancient desert architecture in Siwa Oasis's center. Constructed primarily from kerchief—a resilient mixture of salt rock and mud-brick—this fortress was ingeniously designed to insulate against extreme desert temperatures. 
Nonetheless, due to its strong construction, the Shali Fortress did not stand the test of time and was left to ruin after is succumbed to a devastating rainstorm in 1926. Presently, the remains act as a More alarming, the sites provide today a rather sad view of the past.

The Tombs of the Nobles
Tucked away on the west bank of the River Nile in the town of Luxor are the Tombs of the Nobles which give a truly astonishing insight into the lives of the ancient Egyptian civil servants or low-ranking officials that are mostly referred to as the nobility.

Unlike the grand royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, these tombs present a more intimate view of past lives, focusing on daily activities and natural surroundings.

Cave of Beasts

Discovered in 2002, the Cave of Beasts is nestled in the remote Wadi Sura at the southwestern base of the Gilf Kebir Mountains. This site is particularly notable for its extensive collection of Neolithic rock art, featuring over 5,000 figures painted in vibrant hues. The cave's art provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the hunter-gatherer communities that once thrived in the Sahara.

Salt Mountain

Salt Mountain allows visitors to admire one of the most impressive natural attractions, the salt formations, located in the Rawashka near the Siwa Oasis in the vast territory of the Western Desert of Egypt. The trip to Salt Mountain is a voyage on its right, which allows one to enjoy some beautiful views of the desert and the ocean and observe the glistening salt cathedrals that resemble the snowy mountain range.
